Artist Statement
I find an inherent absurdity, a beautiful grotesqueness, to the burdens and pains of the feminine condition and all the ways in which women are socialized. My art is anchored in a fascination, too, with the fleshy realities of the living, breathing, bleeding human body. There is a profound discomfort to existing within a world that is so critical towards your personhood, but it is this experience that compels me to create, crafting satire out of endurance and making pieces that examine the intricacies of womanhood as I recognize it. Rich in exaggeration, my work is instilled with a humor that relishes in discomfort and recognizes the contradictions at the core of the woman’s condition. I can trace each piece back to my own admiration and observations of the women closest to me, my inspiration woven into the fiber of the tears they’ve shed. I study their lives and draw upon the stories they’ve told, internalizing each lesson they’ve passed down to me. Bit by bit, they’ve give me the implements of my art, and bit by bit, I pull back their layers and dissect them in pieces, digesting, exposing, exploring, and crafting a reverence for their collective story.

About the Artist
Lucia Hall is a Memphis-based artist and designer working primarily in textiles and the fiber arts. While her work is typically sculptural, she often explores other mediums, including collage, printmaking, installation, wearable art, and theatrical design. Her art is focused on a fascination with the body, dissecting the human condition through her own personal lens of visceral absurdism and exaggeration to create pieces that capture the beautifully grotesque and the fleshy realities of womanhood.
Hall graduated with a bachelors in studio art from Rhodes College. Her work has been displayed on several occasions in the Clough-Hansen Gallery at Rhodes, including the recent 2026 Senior Thesis Exhibition. A three-time Ostrander nominee, she has featured on runways and in productions across Memphis, collaborating with the Brooks Museum of Art, the Rhodes Theatre Guild, Germantown Community Theater, and many more community-based organizations. She was awarded the Sally Becker Grinspan Award for Artistic Achievement from Rhodes College in 2026, and has the honor of being the first female sculptor featured in the college’s permanent collection.
